The Kenya Academy of Sports (KAS), in collaboration with the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) and the Ministry of Education, has launched an ambitious Nationwide Talent

Development Camp aimed at identifying and nurturing young athletes. Bringing together 3,000 school-going participants from across the country, the program, which began on November 30 and will run until December 15, 2024, is set to redefine how Kenya develops its sporting talent.

The camps, hosted in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, and Eldoret, offer training in a diverse range of sports, including football, rugby, tennis, table tennis, chess, swimming, volleyball, basketball, hockey, amputee football, deaf basketball, goalball, and wheelchair basketball. This breadth ensures inclusivity and provides young athletes from varied disciplines a chance to refine their skills and gain professional mentorship. “This initiative is a bold step toward securing Kenya’s sporting future,” said KAS CEO, Doreen Odhiambo during the launch in Nairobi. “We’re not just training athletes; we’re building character, discipline, and resilience. With 3,000 young talents enrolled across 13sports, our goal is to give every participant the opportunity to reach their full potential, regardless of their background.”

The training sessions are being held at some of the country’s most renowned schools, including Shimo La Tewa High School in Mombasa, Hospital Hill High School in Nairobi, Kisumu Boys High School, and Moi Girls High School in Eldoret. These venues were selected for their ability to host large numbers of participants while providing a conducive environment for intensive training and mentorship. Participants are learning under the guidance of seasoned coaches and technical experts who bring years of experience from both local and international arenas. Beyond the technical aspects, the camps emphasize values such as teamwork, sportsmanship, and leadership qualities essential for personal growth and professional success. Parents and students have expressed optimism about the initiative. “This camp is a game-changer,” said a parent whose child is attending the Kisumu camp. “It’s an opportunity for my son to not only develop his skills but also to dream big about his future in sports.”

The inclusion of 3,000 athletes across such a wide variety of sports underscores the program’s ambition and inclusivity. Kenya, long celebrated for its excellence in athletics, is now setting its sights on building a legacy across multiple disciplines. By creating a structured pathway for young athletes to transition from grassroots to professional platforms, the Kenya Academy of Sports is laying the foundation for a sustainable and diversified sporting future.

As the sessions progress, the program is expected to inspire a new generation of athletes who will represent Kenya with pride on global stages.
